Born in Tehran, Iran over 40 years ago, Nader Abedini still considers it home. Its influence is apparent in his work, which includes sculpture and calligraphy in addition to paintings. The canvas creations of Mr. Abedini employ acrylics with oil pastels, and can be quite large. The effects of mixed media and size are dramatic, especially in conjunction with his striking technique. Backgrounds are deeply colored with restrained palettes, while the centers of attention glow with luminescence. That glow is constant, even when the models don’t reflect glamour and may be too absorbed to even smile.
Nader Abedini’s paintings focus on individuals at quiet moments; movement is in slow musical notes and physical activity is limited to the sedentary. In his world, time slows for the pursuit of individual fulfillment. Does Mr. Abedini wish to reflect internal calmness, or simply peace within four walls? Are the women in his paintings satisfied and fulfilled with their endeavors? Only Nader Abedini knows for sure, and as he says, “Figurative is my life.”
