Lenore Sempert’s paintings connote strength. Her strokes are bold and confident, suggesting that landscapes and cityscapes can be powerful places in which individualistic dynamism and cohesiveness coexist. Influenced by Color Field artists and Abstract Expressionists, Sempert engaged the theme of freedom in her work. Vigorous brushwork, vibrant colors and compositional innovation all point toward independent expressiveness. Yet, despite its autonomy, Sempert’s work has everything to do with spaces, cities and urbanity. Inspired by her experiences in New York City, Sempert wants to pull her viewers in to the pulse of city life, yet she does not control their interaction with her work; she gives her viewers the freedom to interpret it for themselves. Her work is ultimately about experiences—the experience of being an individual and the experience of interacting with communities and spaces.
Lenore Sempert studied at the Art Student's League and received a B.F.A. from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1976. She lives and works in Brookline, Massachusetts and she has shown widely throughout New England.
