Trees have always resonated deeply in the human consciousness. They tower above us toward the heavens and reveal mystery in the shadows underneath. Laura Flynn Geissel is an artist fully aware of this power. In either pastels or oil paint, Geissel crafts soothing images of trees nestled within rolling landscapes, labeled with evocative titles that direct audiences toward a particular state of mind. These are earnest works that explore joy without sentimentalism, introspection without melancholy. Utilizing a limited palette, Geissel’s approach features her characteristic flurry of strokes, infusing the image with energy and movement while suggesting winds of change or the passing of seasons. Light and shadow play an essential role in her art since in each landscape, there are the dual implications of psychology. "My images seem to communicate the essence of a thing, expressing what is eternal in the human experience," she explains.
Her work has been greatly influenced by former residences in California, Utah, and Maryland. Geissel currently lives in Washington, D.C.
