With a painterly dexterity Lamont Simpson creates striking abstract paintings of interwoven lines and overlapping shapes. The colorful, gestural forms flow across and down the canvas, creating a stunning layered effect. Each work is imbued with an emotional subtext that can readily be felt by Simpson’s audience, meanwhile evoking the human circulatory system, flowing waters, forest canopies, and other natural phenomena. “The colors, shapes and lines that I use,” Simpson explains, “are meant to represent an intense emotion that comes from within a person at a particular point in their life.”
Simpson’s paintings have the ability to articulate without overt representation, allowing for intimate readings and dialogues between the work and the viewer. An up and coming artist from Queens, Simpson’s artistic progression has been a journey of struggle and triumph in developing a personal and unique artistic voice. He lives and works in New York.
