KC Lockrem’s work can vary from jubilant abstracts to raw, mixed-media figuratives, but an uplifting spirit always inspires her energetic colors. Lockrem says that “art has the ability to break down the walls of hate, war and despair.” This communicative function of Lockrem’s work is facilitated by the choice of universal shapes arranged in patterns, which convey hope on an intuitive level. The viewer takes in the experience and personalizes it. Lockrem’s sensitivity to the natural struggles of the world leads not to despair but hope. She is in touch with the artist as a socially responsible participant. Art can exist for its own sake, according to Lockrem, but a philosophy of hope must be conveyed from artist to canvas to viewer, so the work can continue with a life of its own. Lockrem’s deep sense of responsibility to bring forth a new awareness of peace is the fuel for her euphoric yet anchored paintings.
