Exploring the festivity of light and the uncertainty of objects and people cast into shadow, artist Julia Spears presents acrylic and ink paintings that send reality half-way into abstraction, pealing away the unnecessary to reveal an underlying current of individual perception. Spears' characters are presented in their daily environments, with the environment at times becoming the character. In such works as “Paris Café in the 50’s,” figures are positioned with their backs to us, declining to reveal the truths that may be read on their countenances. They sit in shadows, tempting us to draw our own conclusions, becoming a reminder of the complexity of the human spirit and the human mind. Her landscapes too present us with an ambiguity in their grandeur, at one side controlled and at the other unrestrained. Painted with an intuitive eye and a keen understanding of her subjects, Spears’ paintings are testaments to the serenity of accepting life’s variety and celebratory of life’s triumphs. After a career as a clinical psychologist, Julia Spears has returned to live and work in her home state of Texas.
