Judy Quest’s softly muted, ethereal works in oil and pastel on canvas feature a range of natural subjects, all cast in a pearly sheen that adds a gently romantic feeling to her sunsets, figures, seascapes, landscapes, flowers, foliage, birds and animals. The artist is interested in layering, blending and juxtaposition, and through these methods the over-saturated surfaces seem to glow with her carefully chosen pigments even as they give a sense of movement stilled in their chalky depths. The female figures who form the subject of some of her artworks are likewise caught out of time, frozen in a moment full of gentle kinetic energy. Her dreamlike snapshots of Floridian landscape and female figures engender a uniquely feminine pastoral sensibility. Luminous, omnipresent and charmingly embellished with details worth exploring, Quest’s work achieves a painterly neo-Romanticism all her own.
Born in the southern United States, artist Judy Quest is a self-proclaimed ‘Florida cracker at heart.’ She attended Skidmore College in New York and currently lives and works in Punta Gorda, Florida.
