Gloria Marco MunueraGloria Marco Munuera
Photographer Gloria Marco Munuera seeks the primal essence of form in her haunting, ethereal images. She employs a printing technique known as a photogram—previously used by masters such as Man Ray and Imogen Cunningham—which involves no camera or machinery, but the simple imprint of a composition bathed in light. The process allows Marco Munuera to meld the hand of the artist with the tools of the photographer; in doing so, she exposes fallacies in traditional photography. Unlike a photograph, which fakes depth with false perspective, these works force the reality of two-dimensional representation. The images exist on a plane, bound by edges and contained completely within them. The technique welcomes a subjective reading of the works: since it is impossible to fully anticipate the result of such a print, we embrace the unique abstraction of the final product and interpret it in a deeply personal manner. The most delicate compositional decisions are made by the form and the light, not by the artist. In this way, Marco Munuera has found a method that gives voice directly to form, allowing the images to literally speak for themselves. Gloria Marco Munuera, Spanish by birth, is currently a professor of Photography in Florence, Italy. She has exhibited widely in both countries and is currently involved in a year-long tour of her work throughout Spain.
