The art of Gerald Pender Ashford beckons the viewer to contemplate the timeless struggle between natural forces that both surround and are contained within us. In Ashford’s freeform abstract paintings, masses of color are sprayed and pulled across the canvas, sometimes sliced through with a palette knife to expose the layers below. There is a sense of turbulent motion in his works that is further emphasized by creating a rugged texture, reminiscent of Earth’s surface as viewed by satellite photos. Though never formally trained in art, it has nevertheless been an important part of Ashford’s life. Throughout his youth, drawing and painting were of interest to him, but it was not until years after graduation from Rutgers University that Ashford would tackle the complex medium of oil painting. Since his initial experiences with oils, Ashford continues to reinvent himself and explore his personal style. “I now try to create images that are spontaneous, emotional and show a part of myself that I would not, under other circumstances, be willing to reveal.”
