Inspired by the delirious flight of music, dance and architecture, Erich Birchmeier’s broad horizontal strokes on canvas are always tempered by delicate, radial slashes of pigment. His robust palette – featuring cerulean, cinnamon, auburn, teal, pearl pink and burnt orange – conveys a connection between the ephemeral ornamentation of nature and the passing fancies of intellect. A master of spontaneous abstraction, the marks so carefully put to canvas by Birchmeier depict the lush, floral, overwhelming rapture of an indelible and precious psychic space. Informed by his early training as an architect, Birchmeier’s fluid and winsome approach to the architectonic psyche imparts the cavernous depths of emotion and instinct with musical flare.
Erich Birchmeier was born in 1970 in Santiago, Chile. Of Swiss, German and Latin origins, he spent his childhood in Chile under the dictatorship of Pinochet. He currently resides in Valparaiso with his wife, where he maintains a painting practice that has been going now for twenty years.
