Christopher Voss composes his paintings much like a grand orchestra; each color, form and line interacts with other pieces of the visual puzzle. Cryptic titles are the jumping off point as we interact with these captivating works where complicated, interwoven spaces appear to protract before our eyes. Voss' experimentations with mixed media provide for each piece to have a character of its own. Where one employs a vibrant selection of colors another retains a gauzy, impressionistic lighting, as solid forms fade to ephemeral being. Indeed, the thematic elements deal with concepts that often lie on the fringes of pictorial comprehension. Voss explores the positive and negative inner vibrations of the individual. “The works assert that external acts affect the internal condition both in a beneficial and destructive manner,” he explains. He also explores ideas concerning the home and the family, which naturally impact on the inner lives of the individuals within them, and places emphasis on the importance of faith in God and in the context of the familial structure. Exploring the destructive impulse within has led to personal healing and heightened awareness for the artist. To portray such complex concepts he continues to develop a visual language of his own: evocative, introspective, and timeless.
