Astrid Dahl

Astrid Dahl’s landscape paintings find inspiration in some of the most varied and remote natural sites on earth, including the Australian outback, Rajasthan in India, Namibia, and Senegal. Dahl's paintings meet the viewer with a rush of color that carries the verve of the breath-taking formations of the natural landscape. Painting her landscapes from memory, Dahl "respond[s] to that moment in time when life’s energy pushes forward through the communal well of experience." A combination of inks, water-based paints, and acrylic and oil media allows Dahl a great deal of leverage with color and texture. Her colors bleed into one another, then isolate from each other as beads of oil in water, forming colors that glow and fade, creating eye-pleasing forms from the intricate play of the color spectrum. Dahl’s paintings remind the viewer of the untouchable wonder of the wilderness, bringing out the potent beauty of nature’s varied manifestations. Dahl’s work has appeared in exhibitions in Australia, Spain, and Hong Kong over the past three decades, and her work has been represented in McCulloch’s Encyclopedia of Australian Art. The artist lives and works in Sydney, Australia.
