For American artist Anne D. Grandin, all life exists in a circle and all that is living is connected. This is the subtext that runs throughout her art as she explores the relationship of all life forms to one another and the constancy of movement and transition that are so intrinsic to natural life. Inspired by Native American spirituality with its inherent themes of harmony and balance, Grandin suffuses her work with this sense of oneness and symmetry.
Working in oil, acrylic, or spray paint on canvas or board, Grandin creates images that are almost sculptural, composed of molded shapes and geometric forms. Lines undulate across the canvas, creating unexpected forms that somehow come together to create a balanced whole. Her palette is primarily muted and earthy, but often accented by richer hues. Circular patterns dominate her paintings, reminding us again of the ever-present circle of life, and how “we must preserve and care for... the balance that exists within the living circle.”
