Working instinctively in oils, Amanda Dunbar is an accomplished painter whose works are both arresting and intriguing. The pieces draw on familiar imagery, seeking to highlight the interest in objects we see commonly but naturally blank out as background detail. The intimacy of observation, be it of inanimate objects, plants or advertisements, refreshes the viewer’s perceptions allowing us to see anew. Within this sphere, Dunbar’s technique leads her to fragment the images, presenting them as multi-faceted mosaic-like surfaces on which details and close-ups of images are layered. The distinct facets of the works reflect the many deeper levels of meaning within the paintings, engaging with the complexities of the world. Dunbar’s works are not, however, brooding existential soliloquies – with their intense jewel-like colors and exciting use of basic design, the paintings engage in a joyous dialogue with the viewer whose gaze cannot help but be drawn into their magnetic realm.
Amanda Dunbar has exhibited widely to great fame and acclaim. She currently lives and works in Dallas, Texas.
